What to wear to a photoshoot
Your Style Guide
You’ve booked your session—exciting! Now comes the fun part: choosing what to wear. I’m here to guide you every step of the way. While photography is my profession, styling is my passion. I love helping my clients feel confident, comfortable, and completely themselves in front of the camera. The right outfit not only complements your personality but also enhances the overall aesthetic of your final images.
My Approach
My photography is all about capturing genuine connection and natural moments—no stiff poses or forced smiles. I gravitate toward timeless style choices that feel effortlessly elegant. Think soft fabrics, natural textures, and silhouettes that move with you. When it comes to color, I lean into cool tones—muted blues, dusty greens, gentle lavenders, greys, and soft neutrals—that bring a serene, calming feel to your images.
COOL, CALM & CLASSIC
Cool tones have a clean and fresh look that flatters all skin tones and brings a tranquil, polished feel to your photos. I recommend selecting soft, muted colors like sage, powder blue, misty grey, soft white, lilac, and oatmeal. These tones photograph beautifully and blend seamlessly with natural backdrops. Steer toward light layers, knits, linen, cottons, and flowy materials that catch the light and add a touch of texture and movement.
COORDINATE, DON’T CLONE
Avoid perfectly matching outfits (no white shirts + jeans combos here!). Instead, build a cohesive look through a shared color palette. Varying textures and subtle patterns work wonderfully, especially when each family member’s outfit brings something unique to the overall ensemble. A great tip: have the mother or primary outfit-wearer choose their look first, then coordinate everyone else around that.
FOOTWEAR
Barefoot is always beautiful, especially for outdoor or at-home sessions. But if shoes are part of your outfit, make sure they complement your style. Think simple and clean—neutral boots, loafers, or minimal sandals in a tone that works with your palette. Avoid loud sneakers or branded athletic shoes unless it’s truly you.
PERSONAL TOUCHES
Meaningful items—like heirloom jewelry, a cherished baby blanket (for family sessions), or a signature accessory—can add a deeply personal element to your photos. These pieces tell your story, so don’t be afraid to bring them along.
AVOID DISTRACTIONS
To keep the focus on your connections and expressions, steer clear of loud logos, bold prints, neon colors, or overly formal attire. Avoid stiff button-up shirts for men or children unless it's part of your authentic style. Instead, opt for fitted knitwear, long-sleeve tees, or light layering pieces that feel casual but considered. And don’t forget to empty those pockets—no phones, keys, or clunky watches, please!
FEEL CONFIDENT, FEEL BEAUTIFUL
The most important thing you can wear is something that makes you feel like your best self. Confidence shines through in every photo, so choose an outfit that feels true to you—comfortable, flattering, and in harmony with the overall look of your session. Whether it's a soft dress you love or a favorite knit you've worn a hundred times, your comfort will translate to beautiful, connected images. You don’t need anything dramatic—simple, well-chosen pieces styled thoughtfully are more than enough.
